Archipelago consisting of nine volcanic islands, located in the North Atlantic Ocean. One of Portugal’s two autonomous regions, the islands have a population of 245,374 (2009) and a total area of 1,100,000 km2. Its main industries are agriculture, dairy farming, minor livestock ranching, fishing and tourism.
