Aymara

An indigenous language of South America, spoken in the Andean region of Peru, Chile and Bolivia. Aymara is notable for the way in which it structures time. Rafael Núñez and Eve Sweetser report that while Aymara features variants of both an egobased cognitive model for time and a time-based cognitive model for time, in the ego-based model, Aymara speakers conceptualise the future as being located behind the ego, while past is conceptualised as being in front of the ego.
