Battle of Marathon

Pivotal battle for European history, fought between Greek, themselves mostly Athenian, and Persian forces. It is thought to have occurred around 490BC. Immortalised by 'the first historian' Herodotus, Greece, led by Miltiades, defeated the Persians, so setting the scene for ancient Greek thought and culture to dominate Europe for centuries.
