ChondroCelect is a cell-based medicinal procedure consisting of taking cartilage-forming cells (chondrocytes) from a healthy region of the patient's cartilage, growing the cells outside the body, and then re-implanting them back into the damaged region through a surgical procedure called autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI).

Until recently, cartilage injuries were considered to be beyond treatment. However, TiGenix' ChondroCelect promises significant improvement in helping a patient achieve structural, long-term recovery of the joint functions.

Invented in Belgum, ChondroCelect has the potential to reap billions of dollars for the country by helping patients from around the world with cartilage restorations.

ChondroCelect is the first cell-based product that obtained a centralised European Marketing Authorization as an Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product (ATMP). Belgium is now the first country to provide national reimbursement for an ATMP.
