On September 11, 1851, in Christiana, Pennsylvania, a slave owner and a party of supporters and three deputy marshals attempted to capture some runaway slaves hiding in a house protected by 24 armed black men. The slave owner was killed in the fighting and many of his supporters were wounded. The slaves in question fled to Canada.
