The capitol of the Azuay Province in Ecuador. Cuenca is located approximately 2500 miles above sea level.

Cuenca is located in the southern region of Ecuador near the sierra of the Andes Mountains. Four rivers – the Tomebamba, Yanuncay, Tarqui and Machangara – all run by or thorugh the city. It is approximately 9 hours south of Quito, the capitol of Ecuador.

The Spanish settlement of Cuenca was founded in 1557 by explorer Gil Ramírez Dávalos. The city's population and importance grew steadily during the colonial era. Cuenca finally achieved its independence on November 3, 1820.

According to the 2010 Census, there are approximately 330,000 people that reside in the urban area of Cuenca. The local economy is largely dependent on industrial and agricultural development.

The historic area of Cuenca is the destination of choice for most tourists. This area is home to numerous monuments including Iglesia de El Sagrario.
