Cyrillic alphabet

Slavic alphabet derived from the Greek, which emerged in the Balkans when the southern Slavs were converted to Christianity in the 9th century by the Byzantines. The conversion of the Russians in 988 spread a version of Cyrillic to the north and east. The use of a single language and script for sacred and vernacular purposes helped to promote a sense of Russian identity based on Orthodox Christianity.
