On June 11, 1998, President Clinton issued Executive Order 13089 directing all agencies to increase their efforts to protect our nation's coral reef resources. The executive order calls for the establishment of a U.S. Coral Reef Task Force, cochaired by the Secretaries of the Interior and of Commerce. The Task Force will develop and implement a comprehensive programme of inventory, monitoring, and research to map and identify the major causes and consequences of degradation of coral reef ecosystems.
