The First French Empire was the empire of Napoleon I of France. It was a dominant European power during the early 19th century and the empire consisted of mainly areas surrounding modern day France, including parts of the Netherlands, Spain and Austria. The empire ended with the abdication of Napoleon, his subsequent defeat at the Battle of Waterloo and the restoration of the monarchy of the House of Bourbon.
