General Relativity
Einstein generalised his theory of special relativity to include gravity, and called it a general theory of relativity. It showed that apples fall to the ground because the Earth's mass curves the adjacent space-time, forcing apples to move in a special way-towards the surface of the Earth. It has proved, however, extremely difficult to unify General Relativity with quantum mechanics. String theory is currently the best hope for a theory of quantum gravity.
