King of England (r.1217-72). A poor politician and soldier, his unpopularity provoked the barons' rebellion of 1264-66 led by Simon de Montfort; Edward I, Henry's son, did most to quell this. Lack of military success in France resulted in the Treaty of Paris (1259).
