The State Hermitage is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and has been open to the public since 1852. Its collection is comprised of nearly 3 million items, including the largest collections of paintings in the world, and these are displayed across a large complex of six historical buildings, including the Winter Palace.
