164th Pope of the Catholic Church. Pontificate 1130 - 1143. He organised the Second Lateran council of 1139, at which King Roger II of Sicily, Innocent II's most uncompromising foe, was excommunicated, peace was at last restored to the Church. Innocent completed rebuilding the ancient church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, but otherwise his reign after the Second Lateran council was filled with political battles that yielded little results.
