Jesus of Nazareth
Teacher and healer (c.6 BC-AD 30) of Judea, believed by Christians to be the Christ, or Son of God. He preached a form of messianic Judaism, but was crucified on the charge of blasphemy against the Jewish faith. His followers believed in his resurrection and a sect grew up in which he was the Savior. Initially limited to Jews, this sect - known as the Christians - was broadened to accept Greeks and other non-Jews by St Paul, who proclaimed the message throughout the Roman world. The life and teachings of Jesus were set down in the four Gospels between AD 70 and 100.
