Kamakura shogunate

First military government of Japan. Following his victory in 1185 over the Taira clan in the Gempei War, Minamoto Yoritomo founded a bakufu (military government) at Kamakura, south of Edo (modern Tokyo) to rule alongside the imperial court. In 1192 the emperor recognised Yoritomo's dominant position with the title shogun (generalissimo). The major achievement of the Kamakura shogunate was the repulse of Mongol invasions in 1274 and 1281, but the high costs of this weakened the authority of the shogunate and it was overthrown in 1333 by the emperor Go-Daigo.
