Margaret Sanger

(1883–1966) Founder of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Margaret Sanger began her career as a nurse who fought to legalise birth control in order to prevent women from relying on dangerous, illegal, self-induced abortions. Sanger established the first birth control clinic in the U. S. in 1916. In 1948, she helped found the International Planned Parenthood Federation. In the 1950s, Sanger drove the research and development of the birth control pill. One of the world's leading sex educators, Sanger convinced people around the world that they held these four basic human rights:

  • A woman has a right to control her body.
  • Everyone should be able to decide when or whether to have a child.
  • Every child should be wanted and loved
  • Women are as entitled as men to sexual pleasure and fulfillment.
