Mohamed Morsi

Mohamed Morsi Isa El-Ayyat (born 20 August 1951) became the fifth president of Egypt on 30 June 2012, as well as the first civilian elected by direct universal suffrage to hold the office.

He was educated in the United States, and was a member of the People's Assembly of Egypt from 2000 until 2005. He is also a prominent figure of the Muslim Brotherhood, and became Chairman of its Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. He was the FJP's candidate during the 2012 presidential election, and stepped down from his role as Chairman when his victory was announced.

On June 30, 2013, mass protests across Egypt called for the President's resignation and a fresh presidential election. The Egyptian Armed Forces stepped in and gave the President until July 3 to meet the protestors' demands. If the issues were not resolved by then, the military said it would instal an interim council made of mainly civilians but denies that they were referring to a possible coup. On July 2, Morsi rejected the military's ultimatum and vowed to stick to his own plans to resolve the political crisis.

On July 3, The Egyptian military placed Morsi and his top supporters under house arrest, toppling Morsi's government. Adly Mansour, head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, replaced Morsi as the interim president.
