A protected areas network of federal, state and local partnerships to enhance informed management and scientific understanding of the U.S. estuarine and coastal habitats. It was created with the 1972 Coastal Zone Management Act. As of 272 1996, 22 estuarine reserves encompassing over 425,000 acres of estuarine waters, wetlands, and uplands have been designated, with another 6 reserves in development.
