Necronomicon
A fictional book existing in the Lovecraft canon. It was written by "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, who published it some time before his death in 738. The book is said to contain copious amounts of powerful spells, many of them associated with evil acts and death.
While Lovecraft was alive, there was a certain amount of confusion over whether the Necronomicon was a real book or simply a construction. The myth of a real book persists in a minor form to this day with occultists claiming to possess copies.
The book has become widely known in popular culture as a go-to reference for dark magic or the Lovecraftian mythos.
