Nian is a beast from Chinese mythology that either lives under the sea or in the mountains. Each spring, on or around Chinese New Year, it comes out of hiding to attack people, especially children. Nian is sensitive to loud noises and the colour red, which has led to the traditions of firecrackers, red clothing and fireworks during Chinese New Year.
