Nuuk
Nuuk is the capital of and largest city of Greenland, and also the northernmost capital in North America. Located on an island in the Nuup Kangerlua fjord, the city lies on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea and on the west coast of Sermersooq. The capital is nearest to the cities of Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavik in Iceland.
Nuuk is the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. It has a population of 15,469 (2010), making it one of the smallest capital cities in the world by population. With a long and diverse history, Nuuk was first occupied by the ancient pre-Inuit, Paleo-Eskimo people of the Saqqaq culture as far back as 2200 BC.
Nuuk is a larger cultural and economic centre for Greenland. Although only a small city, Nuuk has developed trade, business, shipping and other industries. The city, like much of Greenland, is heavily dependent upon Danish investment and relies on Denmark for block funding.
