Ordinary People is a 1980 Academy Award winning drama about a family dealing with the loss of one of their sons in a boating accident. It won 4 Oscars including Best Picture, beating out the expected winner Raging Bull.

It was the first film of respected director Robert Redford and starred Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore. The original novel was written by Judith Guest and the screenplay by former Academy Award winner Alvin Sargent.

The film was produced on a budget of 6 million USD bankrolled by Paramount Pictures, and returned 55 million at the US box office.
