Quadragesima
The 40-day long liturgical season of prayer and fasting before Easter, which represents the 40 days Jesus fasted in the wilderness. In Western Christianity, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Holy Saturday. The 6 Sundays during this period are not counted as part of the 40 days as each one represents a "mini-Easter", a celebration of Jesus' victory over sin and death. During this time, a purple cloth is placed on the altar.
The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through penitence, prayer, self-denial and almsgiving. People often choose to 'give up' something they particularly like to eat, drink or do during Lent. Alternatively, they may decide to change their behaviour, to benefit others during this time.
