Skype
A peer-to-peer Internet telephony company that provides voice call service using VoIP technology. Skype, which has been acquired by eBay, was founded by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. Skype users can speak to other Skype users for free, but have to pay a small fee for calling or receiving calls from conventional phones.
In 2009, eBay sold a majority stake in Skype to an investor group that included Silver Lake, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Andreessen Horowitz for $1.9 billion in cash and a $125 million note. eBay retained about a third of the company.
News has been circulating that Microsoft is nearing $8.5 billion deal to buy Skype.
