The Sui dynasty was founded in 581 AD and lasted for 40 years. During this time span two emperors ruled the empire. Though the empire was short lived, the events that took place during time greatly influenced China. It was during the Sui dynasty that the bureaucratic examinations opened the era when ordinary people could be absorbed into the government. Also, the famous great canal was constructed during this time.
