The WWE was founded in 1952 as Capitol Wrestling Corporation Ltd, but was bought by Titan Sports Inc in 1982, who changed its name to World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. The name was subsequently changed to World Wrestling Entertainment in 2002.

The WWE is majority-owned and controlled by the McMahon family, including 70% of shares and over 90% voting rights.
