Amyl nitrite (sometimes called amyl nitrate); a very powerful stimulant drug inhaled from a broken phial or popper. Amyl nitrite is prescribed for the treat- ment of angina pectoris, though it has been taken for fun since the 1950s, and for its supposed sexually stimulating effects, especially by gay men, since the late 1970s.
