Barium

Barium oxide (BaO) is used to replace lead in the production of optical glasses and other crystal glass in order to achieve a similar refractive index. While lead oxide raised the refractive index, it also increases the dispersive power, which barium oxide does not alter. Barium is normally added to the batch in the form of barium carbonate.
