Also known as "gun blue" is a chemical process that produces a a blue or blue black oxide finish on steel. The blues are often known as "niter" blues because of the use of nitric acid in the process. These finishes retard rusting but require constant maintenance, cleaning and oiling, to prevent rust in the long term.
