1) The thin layer of grey matter on the surface of the cerebral hemisphere that develops from the telencephalon and folds into gyri. It reaches its highest development in man and is responsible for intellectual faculties and higher mental functions.

2) The convoluted surface layer of grey matter of the cerebrum that functions chiefly in coordination of sensory and motor information -- called also pallium.
