Organic chemicals with two or more functional groups that can bind with metals to form a ring structure. Soil organic matter can form chelate structures with some metals, especially transition metals, but, much metal ion binding in soil organic matter probably does not involve chelation. Artificial chelating compounds are sometimes added to soil to increases the soluble fraction of some metals.
