In stereochemistry, descriptive of a substituent on the same side of a structure that prevents equalisation of positions by restricted rotation, e.g. an olefinic bond, a ring or a peptide bond; contrasted with trans, on the same side of the structure. In genetics, cis refers to linked markers and trans to separated markers.
