Close encounter

A close encounter is an event in which a person witnesses or comes close to an unidentified flying object. Originally suggested by astronomer and UFO researcher J. Allen Hynek in his 1972 book The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry, the Hynek Classification System specifies three types of close encounters: the first kind (CEI), the second kind (CEII), and the third kind (CEIII).
