A series of blood proteins that contribute to innate immunity. When triggered by a foreign substance or particle, a cascade of enzymatic activations and reactions results in chemotaxis, activation of the acquired immune system and opsonization of the substance or particle to allow its clearance by phagocytosis and lysis. see macrophage; opsonin
