Mercury's major landforms include impact craters which dominate the landscape, cratered terranes, widespread intercrater plains, multiring basins, and some smooth plains that mav have been formed by flood basalts. Though an absolute age is nol available now, scientists assume Mercury's heavily cratered regions probably formed during the same period of intense bombardment that formed the lunar highlands.
