Delayed prompting

When the natural antecedent stimulus (S) fails to evoke a given response, an artificial SD (prompt), usually the correct answer, is inserted to occasion the behaviour so it can then be reinforced. Teaching usually progresses by gradually delaying the time between the S* (e.g., a math problem) and the prompt (the answer), until the student emits the correct response reliably in advance of the prompt. See also Transfer of stimulus control.
