A car or waggon is said to be for detaching when it needs to be removed from its train set due to a major fault (hot box, faulty brakes, and so on), meaning that it cannot continue its journey. Detaching is somewhat of a bad omen with passenger services, as the car urgently detached will not necessarily be replaced with one of the same type.
