Dividedness

One of the schematic categories in the configurational system. Dividedness relates to the internal segmentation of a quantity and underlies the distinction between discrete and continuous matter. Discrete matter can be broken down into distinct parts, for instance the categories timber and furniture, which are made up of discrete entities. Continuous matter cannot be broken down into discrete matter, for instance oxygen and water. Dividedness overlaps with but is not the same as the schematic category of boundedness.

For instance, the properties 'unbounded' and 'continuous' are not the same, although they can correlate.

While the mass noun oxygen is both continuous and unbounded, in contrast the mass noun furniture is unbounded but has internally discrete structure. The schematic category dividedness is not encoded by closed class forms.
