down

A boxer is "down" if he touches the floor or canvas of the ring with any part of his body other than his feet, or if the boxer should go outside the ropes from a blow. A boxer can also be called "down" by the referee, if he takes a serious blow or series of blows to the head and is not defending himself. In this case the referee can stop the action and give the fighter a standing 8 or 10 count. The referee could also stop the fight.
