1) Recording the time that elapses from the onset to the offset of a response (e.g., the length of time a person spends talking on the phone).

2) When behaviour is continuous, duration recording is a method of observation. An observer may use a stopwatch, or other timing device, to record the duration of behavior. When a person is sitting in a chair, the watch is timing; and when the person leaves the chair, the watch is stopped.
