Genus of 6 species of low-growing, more or less evergreen perennials from damp, shady woodland and streamsides in S. and E. Asia. Looking frustratingly like its cousin the edible strawberry (frustrating, because the red summer berries are tasteless - but at least they aren't poisonous!), this plant is grown for its 3 cm yellow summer flowers and attractive evergreen foliage. It makes a good groundcover, but is striking enough or front of border or hanging basket. The leaves and flowers are also strawberry-like, and the offsets similarly produced on runners. Place outdoors ocasionally in summer.
