A rod-shaped cytoplasmic protein, and a vital part of a protein complex that connects the muscle cytoskeleton to the surrounding extracellular matrix through the cell membrane to maintain muscle integrity. Dystrophin deficiency/mutation is the cause of muscular dystrophy.
