Emoticon

A facial expression pictorially represented through punctuation and letters, usually to express a writer's mood. Emoticons help the responder gauge the temper and tone of a statement. The word is comprised of the English words emotion and icon. Emoticons have taken on more complex forms, i.e. smiley yellow faces and are often used in internet chatrooms. It was in 1982 that the first emoticon was used and recorded.
