Genus of about 750 species of evergreen epiphytic, lithophytic or terrestrial orchids. They are widespread in tropical North, Central, and South America. Most produce cylindrical, leafy stems, other have a pseudobulbs. The flowers are produced in usually terminal, umbel-like racemes or panicles.
