Exon shuffling

The result of natural genetic recombination that creates a gene for a novel protein from the exons of existing proteins. The presence in introns of many sites for homologous recombination allows the assembly of a gene for a new protein from the exons of existing genes and introns mark the boundaries between domains. Their products are mosaic proteins; each exon, or sometimes several exons, encodes a separate domain.
