The facial discs are synonyms for ears. they are not homologous to human ears, in birds rather these are rounded areas on the bird's face. In certain cases the ears can be of different size and in different places on the bird's head, such as in owls. This allows for exact placement of sounds and also helps to focus sounds by funnelling them into the ears.
