Genus of about 80 species of bulbous perennials from Central and South America. Hippeastrum is often confused with Amarillis. Both plants produce clusters of trumpet-like flowers on thick stalks. Hippeastrum blooms in winter or spring (and real Amaryllis blooms in autumn).
