A highly conserved 180-base polynucleotide sequence that controls body part-, organ- or tissue-specific gene expression, e.g. development of antennae or legs of Drosophila, but also in a wide variety of other eukaryotes. It codes for a helix-turn-helix DNA-binding region, a homeodomain, of proteins that are transcription factors.
