Institutional review board (IRB)

A group of individuals from various disciplines (e. G. , laypeople, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and clergy) who evaluate protocols for clinical studies to assess risks to the research participants and benefits to society. Approval of a local IRB (i.e., an IRB located in the community in which the study is to be conducted) is necessary prior to initiation of a clinical study involving patients.
