Linking number (L)

A topological property of double-stranded DNA; the number of right-handed turns one DNA strand makes around the other. For relaxed DNA the number is equivalent to what it would be for linear, unstressed, DNA, i.e. 1 per 10 base pairs. L is equal to the twisting number plus the writhing number (L=T+W).
